Horizontal Surfaces are made of
Solid Select Pine (Shelves) Actual forest locations of our
sourced material is noted further down this page. Our lumber
comes from FSC Certified forests.
Vertical Surfaces are made of Solid
Select Hemlock (Uprights, cross rails, drawer fronts and doors) Actual forest locations of our
sourced material is noted further down this page. Our lumber
comes from FSC Certified forests.
Uprights are manufactured from clear, Solid Hemlock. Two 1-3/8" x 1-5/8" stiles have a 3/8" wide
x 5/8" deep plow the entire height to receive shelf end
channels and are drilled with 3/16" diameter holes on 1"
centers to allow for shelf adjustability. Stiles are
locked together with two or more cross members mortised into
the stiles. All components are machined smooth with
all outside corners eased. Uprights
are available unfinished or in clear
water based lacquer or select tinted or painted water based
finishes.
Shelvesare manufactured of approximately 3/4" solid select pine. All shelf materials are machined to accept formed aluminum
extrusions shaped to fit into a routed slot on the end of the
shelf and to rest on the shelf support pins. Shelves are available unfinished or in clear water
based lacquer or select tinted or painted water based finishes.
Cross Rails
(Freestanding Kits)are manufactured
from 3/4"thick Solid Hemlock. This kit includes 4
boards and hardware. Two boards connect uprights at
the bottom and two connect at the top to create a
Starter Frame or Add On Frame. Bolts and special
embedded barrel nuts are used to securely bolt
frames together. A simple "Allen" wrench is all that
is needed to screw the boards together with the
uprights (Allen wrench is included).
About our Solid Lumber:
Hemlock and Pine are in the same family species. We have used
Pine as our primary wood source for over 75 years (All world
wide locations use solid pine). Hemlock is used for all vertical
surfaces as it has little to no knots. Both are considered one
of the most sustainable woods in the world as they are some of
the fastest growing trees and most readily available wood
sources.
Solid Maple is used in our drawers. This is wood is considerably
more expensive but needed to hold our very detailed and precise
German Dovetail joinery on all four corners (See image below).

Our Typical Solid
Hemlock Inventory
We manufacture with Hemlock and Pine
as they are in the same family species. All vertical
surfaces are made out of solid Hemlock (Uprights, cross
rails, drawer fronts) and all horizontal surfaces are made
out of solid pine (Shelves only). Hemlock has little to no
knots. Any knots in pine are sanded and filled if needed for
a smooth finish. Our drawers are made out of solid maple
(Maple is considerably more expensive, but needed to hold
our intricate German dovetail joinery)
Lundia Solid
Wood Upright Stiles
in Production
Our drawers are made of 5/8"thick solid
wood sides (4 sides) and then we have a 3/4"thick solid wood
drawer front. All joints are finely crafted German Dovetail,
guaranteed to last you for life. Compare our drawers. You will
not find a better made drawer than ours.
Drawers
Professional Cabinet or Furniture makers will tell you that the
Hallmark of quality in ANY piece of furniture starts with the
drawer. If you want to verify the quality of a wood desk or
furniture piece, open the drawers. Look at how the drawer box is
assembled. Because the drawer is constantly moving and taking
abuse it will be the first item to breakdown.
The cheapest drawers are made
with butt joints or slip joints. Only the finest craftsmen will
use German Dovetail construction. It is the most durable joinery
in woodworking. Some manufacturers will use a combination of
dovetail and butt joints. Our drawer boxes have German Dovetails
at all four corners.
Next look how many "Sides" there
are. Our drawers are called a 5 sided drawer box. That is
because the drawer itself is manufactured as a separate box.
Then the drawer front is attached afterward. If the drawer front
is actually the front of the box, you will eventually pull apart
the joints. Every time you pull on a drawer you a putting
pressure on the front joints of a 4 sided drawer box. A 5 sided
drawer box like ours eliminates that problem.
Hardware Slides
We use top of the line "Accuride brand" ball bearing, full
suspension slides. These are commercial rated slides and are
smooth closing. Full suspension means that your entire drawer
will pull out for easier access to the entire drawer interior
(Some companies will use less expensive slides that only pull
out part way).

We ONLY use Solid Pine and
Hemlock from FSC Certified Forests.
All of our lumber comes
from FSC Certified Green Forests.
We use several sources for our Pine and
Hemlock including the Collins 96,000 acre Lakeview Forest in
Klamath County Order, the 94,000 acre Almanor Forest tucked into
the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California and Sierra
Pacific Industries Timberlands in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish
counties of Washington State.
Sustainable harvesting can
be defined as a method of harvesting that provides a constant
supply of wood resources throughout the landscape, with future
timber yields unaffected or improved by current harvesting methods.
... Foresters emulate natural disturbances with their harvesting methods
to maintain these balances.
Our lumber is
harvested in these forests using "Single Tree Selection". Typically,
the harvest is only 2 to 4 trees that are hand selected per acre of
forest. This is the most responsible method of harvesting trees. In
addition to protecting the forest, this type of forestry also
protects wildlife. For example, Trees are inspected for wildlife
before selection. Trees are never harvested if they contain nests.
Excessive bird droppings (White Wash) marking the bowl or ground
around the tree are examples of nest indicators. Harvesting by
Single Tree Selection, the "Light Touch" has maintained a sustained
balance between vegetation and wildlife not found using more
intensive methods to harvest trees. Source:

Particle board is made
of thousands of small wood chunks glued together with formaldehyde
resin. It's is the least expensive material for making wood
products.
Particle Board is the core
panel that is used for melamine panels
Melamine is simply particle board
or MDF
with a printed paper material attached to one or both sides of the
particle board.
It is the least expensive material for making wood products with a
simulated appearance of real wood.
This is the material used by
California Closets, Closets by Design, Closet World, Container
World, Ikea, Closet Maid and Home Depot.
MDF is particle board made with
extremely fine wood particles instead of wood chunks. The benefit of
MDF is that it is stronger than standard particle board and can be
routed and/or painted. However, standard MDF contains more
formaldehyde as more resin is needed to bond the smaller particles.
This material is commonly used by
cabinet makers as a lower cost alternative to plywood and covered
with paper melamine, plastic laminate (HPL) or actual wood veneer.
Plywood is several layers or ply's
of wood that are all glued together to form a plywood panel. There
are numerous quality levels of plywood depending on the material,
the amount of layers and the glue used to make the plywood. Glue on
standard plywood contains formaldehyde, although not nearly as
much as particle board. Glue on Soy Based Plywood is made out of soy
bean and contains no formaldehyde.
This is the material used most
often by cabinet makers for custom cabinetry. This is typically
considered the best material next to solid wood.
Solid Wood is cut directly from the
tree and milled to different thicknesses. It is then surfaced/planed
into dimensions prepped for final use....typically made in 3/4", 1",
1 1/4" and 2" thicknesses for cabinet use. The lumber industry
describes the thickness of solid wood in "Rough" dimensions after it
has been cut in the mill but before it is surfaced smooth into it's
final thickness. That is why a 2" x 4" is actually only 1 1/2"thick.
It was cut at 2"thick before being surfaced smooth.
This is the material used by
Lundia USA (aka SimpleCloset). It requires more skilled labor and
much more involved manufacturing processes. A cabinet frame made out
of melamine/particle board will have 4 pieces. That same frame made
out of solid wood will require 14 separate solid wood parts.
We cannot "Guarantee" exactly
how much weight our shelves will hold.
As you can see by this dated photo, our shelving is built to hold a
tremendous amount of weight. However, we do not recommend holding a dozen men
on our shelves!
Lundia shelving will deflect if it is
overloaded. If you are going to load heavy books, we recommend
shorter shelving lengths (i.e. 24", 30" or 36"widths). A 42" or 48"
shelf may show slight deflection on heavy loads.
We have included photos below to
show you how our shelves can deflect based on the shelf width
and how much weight. All the shelves below are 12" deep for our
example.

with 500 lbs of weight.
Notice that there is still NO deflection in the shelf
(Compare the line of the yellow string to the shelf)
NO DEFLECTION
IMPORTANT: We do not guarantee
the weight capacities or how much weight will make your shelf
deflect. This is to give you a general idea. Since wood is a
natural product, every shelf can and will react differently to
weight.
